Lecture Capture Technology Provides Faculty with Teaching Options

Tuesday, September 03, 2013

Among the many new advancements funded by Fairmont State’s Title III grant, lecture capture is a new instructional technology tool that will be available to faculty in the College of Science & Technology and School of Business.

As the name suggests, this technology involves the “capturing” of instructors’ lectures along with any audio, video or visual aids used, such as laptop or tablet applications, PowerPoint slides, whiteboard or other presentation materials used during the lecture. The captured presentation is then made available online for students to access on their own time and to review the materials as much as they need.

During the first year of the Title III grant, the College of Science & Technology has installed a lecture capture system, Mediasite by SonicFoundry, in Room 305 of the Engineering Technology Building. Over the next four years, other classrooms in Hunt-Haught Hall and Jaynes Hall will be equipped with lecture capture. Additionally, faculty in both the College of Science & Technology and the School of Business can use My Mediasite Desktop Recorder to create, edit and upload presentations from their laptop, office or home computers.

“With the help of our Instructional Technology staff, we have integrated a technology with a very easy-to-use faculty interface.  A faculty member can simply walk into the classroom, push the record button and focus on their teaching,” said Dr. Tony Gilberti, Dean of the College of Science & Technology.

“The recorded material can be very easily edited and uploaded to Blackboard or other sites to help reinforce the learning that has taken place in the classroom.  As an instructor, I find this very useful to help students master difficult concepts.  Short video clips can even be loaded prior to class as an aid in a future discussion or to address reading and homework assignments.  In essence, one can develop a series of videos to address specific areas that students have difficulty with or to create video clips to address new or previously covered material.”

Whether the lecture is captured during the actual class session or it is prerecorded, the lectures are managed, published and saved on a server and then quickly made available for students to access.  Almost no post-production work or editing is required; however, professors have the option to edit out parts of the class period to create clips to focus on key components of the material or to eliminate unwanted material, such as a disruption or an unrelated tangent. Students can then watch these presentations online at their own convenience.

With lecture capture, professors may choose to change up the traditional classroom by using the “flipped classroom” method of instruction. In a flipped classroom, instructors prerecord their lecture, post it to Blackboard and assign it to students to view prior to the class period. This way, students will come to class ready with the basic knowledge necessary to participate in classroom activities and active learning opportunities. More time will be available in the classroom setting for collaborative and experiential learning since the lectures have been viewed outside of class.

Faculty also can choose to use lecture capture without flipping their classroom. With lecture capture, instructors can record their in-class lectures and all of the presentation materials and make this available to students to use as a homework aid or study tool. Professors can also use lecture capture to create short learning modules on key content.

Students can go back in and re-watch a lecture or learning module as many times as they want. When viewing the material, they will have the ability to fast forward, pause, rewind, and skip segments; therefore, they can learn at their own pace. More importantly, students will be able to review specific segments – ones of high importance or maybe ones they find confusing. The professor can see how many times the lecture is watched and which segments of the presentation receive the most views. Faculty can then assess what content they may need to review or reteach in class.

Lecture capture is another instructional tool designed to enhance teaching and learning. This technology can help lessons become clearer and communication and collaboration become more frequent. Providing a technology-rich learning environment is one of the key components of Fairmont State’s Title III project, “Revitalizing Curricula as Experiential, Collaborative and Technology-Rich.” However, technology is only a supplement—not a replacement—for the direct interaction and collaboration among faculty and students—one of the many great attributes for which Fairmont State is known.

“Faculty are always looking for new methods to enhance learning that takes place both within and away from a direct classroom experience,” Gilberti said. “Many of the faculty in the College of Science & Technology are gifted in the variety of teaching styles and approaches that they use to help students learn.  The technology and professional development opportunities that are being fostered in our Title III grant provide a new set of techniques and opportunities for faculty to enhance their ‘toolbox’ of teaching strategies to further assist students.”

IBM Academic Initiative Provides Real-World Experience

Fairmont State University produces well-trained, well-seasoned interns who are ready to tackle the business world.

FSU senior and Moorefield native Lucas Myers recently completed an internship with for the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC) in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, area. The internship was awarded through the IBM Academic Initiative.

As an Information Systems Management major, Myers, 23, learned computer programming and database management in his FSU classes.

“My classes prepared me really well. I had the background in every phase of my internship. It took me a while to learn ‘computer-ese’—they used abbreviations I wasn’t used to,” he said.

FSU’s College of Science and Technology and School of Business participate in the initiative. The IBM Academic Initiative, which began at FSU in 2012, matches graduates’ information technology skills with workforce needs. FSU is the only college or university in West Virginia that is participating in the IBM Academic Initiative.

Myers started his internship at DTCC in June 2013 in Coppell, Texas, after applying for in the spring semester. DTCC is a post-trade financial services company that provides clearning and settlement services to the financial markets. It offers a way for buyers and sellers of securities to make their exchange in a safe and efficient way and provides central custody of securities. Myers worked on the mainframe computer side and automatic systems side, scheduling jobs on the computer. He also managed servers from the Windows side and Linux side.

“I worked five days per week and some Saturdays, too,” Myers said. “It was a paid internship. DTCC let me and another intern rent out a room in Arlington, not too far from Coppell. It’s expensive to live there, not to mention hot. The temperature was about 108 degrees every day. It took a while, but I sort of got used to it.”

He noted that DTCC’s employees, about 250 professionals at the Coppell facility, treated him well.

“They wanted my opinions on how to improve internships and business. I got a good background of how a big corporation works and the interaction between all the departments,” Myers said.

“DTCC balances nearly every bank in the United States every day and opens and closes every stock market,” Myers explained. His work required a high security clearance, including fingerprinting and a full background check.

“An internship like that definitely opens up your mind. It was a great experience. DTCC offered me a job in their ELITE program on the mainframe/distributor side. I’m not sure what I will do. I know I’m in the program and am considering my options. When I graduate next May, I hope to find a job that helps me learn more about interacting with people and helping others,” he said. “I plan to stay close to my family, but it depends on the opportunities and the job.”

Myers said he plans to meet with Dr. Frank Lee and visit Robert Morris University, where he will interview with a few different companies including J.P. Morgan Chase and Parker-Hannefin. Lee is an Associate Professor of Information Systems Management at FSU.

Lee is the IBM Academic Initiative coordinator in the School of Business at FSU who helped create the curriculum for the program.

“Our goal is to create enterprise computing. We listened to industry, created the course, trained the students and matched students with the companies. Lucas Myers is an Information Systems major. We worked on his student profile and matched him with the company, DTCC. He gained real experience with mainframe computers, security issues and databases. Companies want to hire people with experience, and Lucas Myers got that experience in his internship,” Lee said.

IBM uses the ZOS, the “Z” operating system, Lee said. “We are finding there is a demand in the market right now for the ZOS; it’s a big area right now. Many companies are complaining about the level of skill in this area. At FSU, we decided to get involved. We can train and educate the students and help them prepare for a high-salary job, at least $75,000 to start. Not just anybody can get a job like this. If students keep working on their resume and focus on growth, they can improve their chances,” he said. “Many industries here are using the IBM system. We listened to them and are finding solutions. They love it. We get all the resources from IBM. They are willing to share their resources and let the students get real experience.”

Lee said the goal at FSU is to help find jobs for students in financial and accounting companies.

“It’s interesting. Within the next few years, a majority of mainframe computing workers will retire. Those jobs will be wide open for our students. Banks, Insurance companies, and governments —all these are our potential targets. They have plenty of internships available in Pittsburgh, New York, Delaware and Texas. I talked to JP Morgan Chase and Vanguard this summer about internships with their companies,” Lee said.

Any business major can become involved in the IBM Academic Initiative, Lee said. “Any technology major is welcome, too. They can take the class.”

He said 15 students are in the program currently, and about 10 more students are added annually.

“These students are well prepared with the right track. IBM is happy with the training and education they receive. It’s a win/win situation for both IBM and FSU. I hope more students get interested here,” Lee said. “My challenge is that many students in high school are fearful of this area. Colleges are working on recruiting high schools students in this area. We give them direction, and IBM will sponsor a Career Day. When they choose this field of study, we can ensure that they will be well-trained students.”

School of Business Student Honored with State Accounting Award

A Fairmont State University School of Business student has been named one of the top three accounting students in the state by The West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Zachary LeFevre of Clarksburg has been honored with the third place Outstanding Accounting Senior Award for 2013-2014, including a plaque and $500. In the fall of each year, the Recruiting & Opportunity Project Group of the WV Society of CPAs recognizes students majoring in accounting from colleges and universities across the state. To be eligible for nomination, students are required to meet the following criteria: be a student member of the WV Society of CPAs, graduate between December 2013 and May 2014, major in the accounting field, have an accounting GPA and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, submit a current resume, submit a transcript, provide a minimum of two references, submit an essay explaining why the student should be recognized with the award and complete a requested transmittal form.

The son of Phil LeFevre and Donetta Watson, both of Clarksburg, Zach LeFevre graduated from Robert C. Byrd High School in 2010. In high school, he took college courses at the Gaston Caperton Center to get a head start on college. A senior at Fairmont State, he plans to graduate in May 2014 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance.

“I’m really excited and honored to have this prestigious award. I know how many hours of studying I have put in. I have been focused since day one. I am just thrilled to see the hard work pay off,” he said.

LeFevre currently is an intern for Arnett Foster Toothman, PLLC, in Bridgeport, one of the top 150 accounting firms in the country.

“I was very pleased to get on with them my junior year. I interned with them for tax season my junior year from January to April. They created a special summer internship for me, and I’m already locked into a position after graduation. The people there are amazing. I have gained so much by working there, there’s so much you can’t learn in the classroom,” he said.

Theodore A. Lopez, CPA, a member of Arnett Foster Toothman, wrote a letter of recommendation for LeFevre for the award calling him “the stuff good employees are made of.”

“Young people are driven by many things; their quest for excellence, praise, monetary gain, but Zach is driven by good old-fashioned integrity, dependability and a strong work ethic. He is a producer of timely prepared quality work, he possesses a strong working knowledge of accounting skills, and his attitude is one of involved, interested and high spirits,” Lopez wrote.

Mary A. “Dede" Burnell, CPA, Coordinator of Accounting and Assistant Professor of Accounting and Finance at FSU, also wrote a letter of recommendation for LeFevre.

“His academic record underscores his abilities as I have seen them in the classroom. He prepares his work on time and completes the assignments in ways that reflect the spirit of the assignment rather than just the stated assignment. His scores are consistently among the top in my classes,” Burnell wrote.

LeFevre has been vice president of the Student Accounting Society at FSU since August and will become president in January 2014. He also is a member of the Student Leadership Board for the School of Business and Delta Mu Delta National Business Honor Society for which he serves as treasurer.

LeFevre credits the School of Business faculty for preparing him to win the award and to successfully enter the accounting field.

“Fairmont State’s accounting professors are top of the line. Mrs. Burnell and Dr. T. Jean Engebretson are my go-to people in the accounting department. They prepare you for everything. Mrs. Burnell gives out questions that are CPA oriented to prepare you for the CPA exam. Anytime you need help they are more than willing to help. They are great professors,” he said.

“I wanted a smaller school atmosphere. In choosing a college, I knew Fairmont State was more student-oriented. There are 10 or 15 students in my senior level accounting classes. The smaller class sizes allow you to focus on the material. The teachers know you on a first-name basis. I can text some of my professors. It’s more face to face. You can connect with your professors and not be afraid to go into their offices. Fairmont State is not too big or too small, and it’s student friendly.”

A Fairmont State University School of Business faculty member was a finalist in a national challenge.

Dr. Frank Lee, Associate Professor of Information Systems Management, attended the IBM Information On Demand conference in November in Las Vegas. According to IBM’s web site, the conference brought together experts and peers to explore how big data and analytics are changing the way organizations do business. During the show, IBM unveiled new products and services while highlighting new client success stories.

During the conference, finalists were chosen each day to participate in the IBM Win Big Challenge Championship Round, which was held during the Technology Futures Luncheon on Nov. 7. Conference attendees competed at the conference site each day, and a live leader board displayed real-time standings throughout the conference. A total of four daily winners were selected, including FSU’s Lee. The four finalists competed in the Championship Round on stage in front of more than 8,000 people and viewers on a web simulcast.

Although Lee didn’t win the grand prize of a 13-inch MacBook Pro with a retina display, he said he enjoyed the experience and learned valuable information at the conference to pass along to colleagues and students at FSU.

Fairmont State University Accounting students are providing free income tax preparation assistance in four counties and receiving real-life experience to benefit them in their future careers.

Accounting students are once again offering IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) tax preparation services in Fairmont, Mannington, Clarksburg, Kingwood and Parsons. The VITA program, which is supervised by Dr. T. Jean Engebretson, provides free basic tax return preparation for eligible taxpayers. VITA provides students with hands-on learning about income tax preparation and real experience working with tax clients.

“The VITA program is an effective community outreach service of the School of Business. The students work long hours and travel to many locations to provide this free service. Their level of expertise and professionalism is routinely praised by the participants. The goodwill generated for the School of Business is immeasurable,” said Dr. Richard Harvey, Dean of the School of Business.

In 2013, the West Virginia Alliance for Sustainable Families presented Fairmont State University with its Higher Education Partner of the Year Award to honor volunteer service by the FSU School of Business and its VITA program.

Student volunteers have a responsibility to provide high quality service and uphold the highest of ethical standards. The student volunteers receive training and certification from the IRS to help prepare basic tax returns in North Central West Virginia communities. Many taxpayers return each year and refer their friends and neighbors to the FSU VITA program.

The Fairmont State VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries and other convenient and public locations. The service includes free electronic filing. To view the complete 2014 VITA schedule of dates and locations, click here. For more information, call (304) 367-4261. *Please note: The Feb. 15 date at the Ruth Ann Musick Library has been canceled.

No appointment is necessary, but those who wish to participate should arrive at least one hour prior to closing time. Returns are prepared on a first-come, first-served basis. The number of returns prepared may be limited.

A Fairmont State University School of Business faculty member has been named the recipient for the Region 2 2014 ACBSP Teaching Excellence Award. The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) recognizes individuals annually from each of its 10 regions who exemplify teaching excellence in the classroom.

Dr. C. Frank Lee, Associate Professor of Information Systems Management, will be honored, along with other regional recipients, at the 2014 ACBSP Annual Conference, June 27-30 in Chicago, and will receive a medallion and a $100 check. Two International Teaching Excellence Award recipients will be announced at a special Salute to Regions luncheon, one from a baccalaureate/graduate degree-granting institution and one from an associate degree-granting institution. As a regional recipient, Lee is now a candidate for the international award.

“Dr. Lee has demonstrated superior leadership and teaching ability. His course management skills and dedication to his students are exceptional. He incorporates current instructional technology in his courses and requires analytical thinking and writing skills in all his courses through the use of case studies, term paper assignments, and/or short-answer examination questions. He is particularly sensitive to other demands (i.e. family obligations, job obligations) on students, and develops close, personal relationships with many of his students who consider him a valuable mentor,” said Dr. Richard Harvey, Dean of the Fairmont State University School of Business.

The Associate Degree Commission of ACBSP established the International Teaching Excellence Award in 1995 to recognize outstanding classroom teachers. In 2002, the Baccalaureate/Graduate Degree Commission created a similar award to recognize excellence in teaching at the baccalaureate/graduate degree level. ACBSP is the only specialized accrediting body for business schools that presents an award recognizing excellence in teaching, open to application by the entire membership.

“It is more important than ever for business programs to produce graduates who are ready to enter the global marketplace,” said Douglas Viehland, ACBSP Executive Director. “ACBSP has a mission to develop, promote and recognize best practices that contribute to continuous improvement of business education. Recognition of teaching excellence is one way we achieve this goal.”

About ACBSP

ACBSP is the only global accrediting body to accredit business, accounting and business-related programs at all degree levels. ACBSP’s mission is to promote continuous improvement and recognize excellence in the accreditation of business education programs around the world. ACBSP is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) as a specialized accreditation agency for business education. ACBSP currently has 1,227 member campuses, 186 of which are located outside of the U.S. Of those campuses, 923 have achieved accreditation and more than 200 are in candidacy for accreditation. Individual members on these campuses now exceed 11,000. For more information, visit www.acbsp.org.

A group of Fairmont State University faculty members participated in professional development during the summer to support assessment of learning and building an institutional assessment system and to become assessment ambassadors for their academic departments.

Forty-two faculty members from multiple academic units attended a series of three, three-day Critical Friends Academies in June and July. Deb Hemler of the College of Science and Technology and Jaci Webb-Dempsey of the School of Education, Health and Human Performance convened each session. The effort also was supported by Van Dempsey, Vice President for Institutional Assessment and Effectiveness.

“Institutional assessment is going to be a critical focus for the 2014-2015 academic year to help support rigorous assessment of learning and building a system that will inform program improvement and meet the expectations of the Higher Learning Commission accreditation process,” Webb-Dempsey said. “We would like to thank the faculty members who gave their time this summer and who have committed to providing future support to their colleagues.”

Participating faculty members included Matt Hokom, Clarence Rohrbaugh, Suzanne Heagy, Deborah Nestor, Christopher Kast, Erin Hippolyte and Josh Smallridge, College of Liberal Arts; Andreas Baur, Susan Goodwin, Robynn Shannon, Phil Yeager, Hugh Costello, Philip Freeman and Steven Roof, College of Science and Technology; Rebecca Giorcelli, Tim Oxley, T. Jean Engebretson, Leisa Muto and Frank Lee, School of Business; Francene Kirk, Jennifer Yerdon LeJeune, Constance Edwards, Jeff Greenham, J. Patrick Joyce and Elizabeth Melanson, School of Fine Arts; Denise Lindstrom, Amanda Metcalf, Julie Reneau, G.H. “Budd” Sapp, Jessica Brown and Amy Sidwell, School of Education, Health and Human Performance; Vicki Kerwin, Gale Kirby, Veronica Gallo, Denice Kirchoff, Tanya Rogers, Leia Bobo, School of Nursing and Allied Health Administration; and Jim Matthews, Robert Hammonds and Gwen Jones representing General Studies.

“The Critical Friends group provides a mechanism for a professional learning community on campus that will allow colleagues to support each other and improve the teaching and learning process via giving and receiving feedback. It is extremely important to be involved in a group that permits peers to communicate and collaborate across campus in order to improve faculty teaching and student learning via assessment accountability,” Sapp said.

Kirk said that conversations about teaching and learning happen frequently on campus, but the Academies provided a forum for a broader discussion without a lot of distraction.

“The Academies were important because they were time specifically carved out of our busy schedules to think deeply about what we want our programs to accomplish and how we’re going to know that they do what we say. What skills and knowledge and behavior do we want students to take away when they leave?” she said.

Sapp said he hopes he can share information with colleagues about developing a program assessment plan and an annual assessment cycle; utilizing TaskStream to document, map and assess learning outcomes as well as summarize findings and generate recommendations; and developing mission statements, program goals and course learning outcomes.

Heagy pointed out that learning about the language and practice of assessment is important for all educators in that it is a reflective endeavor that seeks to provide the best course content to students.

“One important thing for me was learning how other departments include adjuncts in the assessment process,” she said.

Despite the serious focus of the professional development sessions, participants also experienced a side benefit from meeting.

“Another positive from the sessions was that we had the opportunity to get to know faculty from other schools and colleges within the University much better, and not just professionally. For example, Jennifer Yerdon LeJeune from the School of Fine Arts brought her baby Quinn with her, and I really enjoyed walking around the room holding him one afternoon so Jen could work with her colleagues,” Webb-Dempsey said. “We are fortunate to have a campus community that is so willing to grapple with the hard—and sometimes contentious—issues related to improving teaching and learning and also maintain such a strong sense of community.”

Growing Fashion Company Has a Heart for Home

A new fashion brand with Marion County roots provides high-end, handmade, art-inspired products. Showcased as part of Septemberfest, Beth Keener LLC is a partnership company owned and operated by Farmont State University alumnae Beth Keener and Melissa Craig.

Septemberfest is an all-day festival on Saturday, Sept. 20, in downtown Fairmont sponsored by the Fairmont State Alumni Association, Main Street Fairmont and the City of Fairmont. A Family Fun Zone will include music and a hay maze in the green space on Adams Street. From 3 to 3:30 p.m. there will be a Mr. Twist Magic Show. Phil Wiseman will DJ from 4 to 4:45 p.m. and play live music from 5 to 5:45 p.m. From 6 to 9 p.m. Downtown After Dark will provide live music, street fair vendors, a Community Beer Garden (proper I.D. required) and a glow-in-the-dark hay maze. Three Piece Soup will play from 6 to 6:45 p.m. and Tammy will play from 7 to 9 p.m.

An art exhibit and fashion runway event by Beth Keener LLC with the theme “Art Is Dead” will take place at The Gatherings, 216 Monroe St., from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20.  The fashion runway show begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the exhibit/fashion show are available for purchase for $7.50 through Sept. 18 at www.bethkeener.com and will be sold at the door at the event for $10.

After growing up together in Marion County and becoming friends at FSU, Keener, Class of 1997, and Craig, Class of 1995 reconnected in 2012. Keener had just relocated from Nashville to Virginia to focus on her personal art and was creating a line of art canvas clutches. Craig purchased two of those clutches and commissioned an installation art piece by Keener for her home in Middleburg, Va.

“Beth was coming out of the Nashville art scene, and I was coming out of the Washington, D.C., work environment, and we were both ready to do something different and the partnership made sense,” Craig said. Keener uses her artistic talent and background in graphic design and art history to steer the creative direction, and Craig utilizes her business and communications background to lead from the business standpoint.

The Beth Keener LLC brand focuses on artistic luxury products available in a range of price points. From art canvas clutches that take 8 hours each to produce to bags made from leather, silk screen and vinyl, Keener reuses and repurposes materials into her designs whenever possible, from vintage jewelry to fur to animal bones.

“Each original product is either a one-of-a-kind, or a limited edition, to ensure our customers get to enjoy something as stylishly unique as they are,” Craig said.

Under its Artist Alliance, the brand has expanded to include collaborations with two other artists who create one-of-a-kind pieces. Grazia Zalfa is a jeweler and published designer, and Anthony Gaskins is a hat milliner and designer. At shows and on its web site at www.bethkeener.com, Beth Keener LLC also sells products from hand-selected vendors that produce high-end products and also give back to their community in some way.

“It’s one of our business plan goals to be a blessing back to others,” Craig said. “Over the past year and a half we’ve been focused on brand awareness, hitting the road, getting our name out there, trunk shows and studio spaces and getting the web site established. Our momentum is really heading west toward West Virginia and Tennessee, which is a nontraditional approach for a fashion brand, but I think it sets us apart. We can do Miami, D.C. or New York, but our momentum is a little more personal. It’s not just about how many bags we can sell tomorrow.”

For the Fairmont runway show, the company partnered with Student Government to recruit students to give them the opportunity to have real-life modeling experience.

“For us to be able to come back to Marion County for our largest show yet is very exciting. We said from the very beginning that we had a heart for home,” Keener said.

The “Art Is Dead” theme for the show originates from street graffiti Keener saw one day while going for a run in Nashville. After seeing those words painted under a train trestle, she began to struggle with the question: “Is art dead?”

“Even after something dies there is a remnant. How can you tell that story to people and communicate that visually? The best way I can think to do it is to use skulls and bones, the remnant, and make them visually appealing. I hope that it’s confronting, but that people also make the connection,” Keener said.

The show will include paintings, installation works, contemporary art and clutches and bags using industrial elements, hand-painted leather, fur and animal bones. Pieces also will have a repurposed, vintage flair. In collaboration with Rina Potesta from The Fashion Scene in Fairmont, Keener deconstructs vintage gowns, hand-paints new dress panels and reconstructs them.

“We hope those who attend the show see that art is not dead. It’s about to be reanimated on the runway,” Craig said.

The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree with a General Business Concentration will be offered with a new schedule option starting in August 2015--weekday evening classes that begin at 4 or 5:30 p.m. each day--at the Caperton Center, 501 W. Main St., Clarksburg.

“This new schedule for the four-year Business Administration degree at the Gaston Caperton Center has been designed with working adults and high school students in mind,” said Dr. Nancy McClure, Director of the Caperton Center. “Evening classes add ease to scheduling, and our first-class facility located in downtown Clarksburg provides a convenient location with ample parking to start this business degree. With small class sizes, experienced and credentialed faculty and resources students need to succeed, the Caperton Center looks forward to welcoming new students for the fall. It’s not too early to think about applying today.”

The program gives students a fundamental understanding of the substance and context of business in a world that is highly competitive and dynamic. Students are exposed to a diversified background in the various disciplines necessary for achieving success in the business arena.

“The Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in General Business already is a popular program on the main campus in Fairmont, and the School of Business is pleased to expand its offerings in Harrison County and meet the needs of working adults who find evening courses more accessible,” said Dr. Richard Harvey, Dean of the School of Business.

Fairmont State University Accounting students are providing free income tax preparation assistance in four counties and receiving real-life experience to benefit them in their future careers.

Accounting students are once again offering IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) tax preparation services in Fairmont, Mannington, Monongah, Clarksburg, Kingwood, Bruceton Mills and Parsons.

To view the complete 2014 VITA schedule of dates and locations, visit http://www.fairmontstate.edu/schoolofbusiness/academics/vita-income-tax-.... For more information, call (304) 367-4261.

No appointment is necessary, but those who wish to participate should arrive at least one hour prior to closing time. Returns are prepared on a first-come, first-served basis. The number of returns prepared may be limited. Those who wish to participate should bring a photo ID for the taxpayer and spouse, Social Security cards for every person listed on the return and medical insurance information.

Fairmont State University’s outstanding faculty members were recognized on Wednesday, April 29, during the Recognition of Faculty Achievement for their exemplary efforts throughout the 2014-2015 academic year.

“It’s wonderful to have an event like this where we can all come together to celebrate the good work faculty are doing,” FSU President Maria Rose told those gathered in the Falcon Center conference rooms. “Fairmont State truly is set apart by this tremendous faculty. While we can tout an excellent faculty-to-student ratio, as compared to larger institutions, that statistic only becomes meaningful when we consider the quality of our faculty. I consider myself fortunate to be part of this institution and consider all of you colleagues and friends.”

The event was hosted by the Faculty Development Committee, the Office of Academic Affairs and the Fairmont State Foundation, Inc. Funding for the awards and grants is provided by the Office of Academic Affairs and the Fairmont State Foundation, Inc.

“Our program recognizes members who are recipients of awards or grants promoted and publicized by the Faculty Development Committee and the Office of the Provost. These awards are to honor outstanding faculty, as well as encourage faculty research and professional development. Thanks so much to all members of the Fairmont State Foundation who so generously support faculty achievement. We appreciate it, and our students do, too,” said Dr. Denise Lindstrom, Assistant Professor of Teacher Education and Chair of the Faculty Development Committee.

The following faculty members were honored at the event: Dr. Andreas Baur, William A. Boram Award for Teaching Excellence; Dr. Paul Reneau, Harold and Roselyn Williamson Straight Award; Dr. Robin Payne, Faculty Recognition Award; Dr. Rhonda Sanford, Fairmont State Foundation, Inc. Fellow Award; Dr. Gwen Jones, Fairmont State Foundation, Inc. Grant; Ryan Frost, Outstanding Adjunct Award; Dr. Jennifer Myers, Excellence in Academic Advising Award.

The following faculty members were recognized for their promotion to Associate Professor and received Tenure: Jason Bolyard, Hugh Costello, Alexis Hicks, Dr. Jennifer Myers, Dr. Adam Podlaskowski, Michael Ryan, Ashley Shroyer and Dr. Sam Spears. The following faculty members were promoted to Full Professor: Dr. Gwen Jones, Dr. Tad Kato and Kirk Morphew. The following faculty members were honored with Emeriti Status: Dr. D. Stephen Haynes, Dr. Tulasi Joshi, Dr. Susan Kelley, Chuck Manly and Dr. Mary Meighen.

Dr. Andreas Baur, William A. Boram Award for Teaching Excellence

The William A. Boram Award for Teaching Excellence recognizes full-time faculty at Fairmont State for outstanding achievements, unusual dedication or accomplishments in teaching. Dr. Andreas Baur, Professor of Chemistry in the College of Science and Technology, was nominated by his students for the award.

Lindstrom presented him with the award and gave the following remarks: “According to his students, Dr. Baur goes above and beyond the call of duty to teach. They feel like he cares about them as individuals as well as students. One student explained that Dr. Baur does not demand that students memorize information for the exam. Instead, he employs a strategy called the ‘toolbox,’ an organizing strategy that helps students understand how chemical reactions and mechanisms are interconnected, which according to his students, makes chemistry seem less like a graduation requirement and more like a lens with which to view the world at large.”

The committee was most impressed with Baur’s commitment to improving teaching, not only in his courses but also in his program, Lindstrom said. “According to one of his colleagues, Andreas has accomplished a truly impressive amount of assessment driven curriculum and course development that spans the categories of teaching and scholarly activity. He is a steadfast champion of assessment in his program and he continually reminds his colleagues of the inherent value of assessment to improve courses and programs. Most importantly, he leads by example in closing the loop on assessments in his courses and brings useful data to inspire discussions about programmatic improvement,” she said.

A group of seven of his students attended the event to support Baur.

“When I entered the chemistry field, there were rumors about how each teacher was. Dr. Baur’s rumors were always the same: he’s strict, his classes are hard and they are impossible to get good grades in. Some of this is true. He is strict about deadlines, but so are all the teachers. His classes are hard, but that is why they are upper level courses. However, it is not impossible to achieve in his classes. If you listen to what he says, you will succeed. Dr. Baur has taught us so much, which now we can take with us and find a job and always be on time and know just because it is hard doesn’t mean we should quit,” said student Brittany Aragon.

Baur has been a faculty member at FSU since 2000. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Regensburg in Germany.

Dr. Paul Reneau, Harold and Roselyn Williamson Straight Award

Paul ReneauThe Harold and Roselyn Williamson Straight Award honors and encourages innovative and distinctive teaching by faculty at Fairmont State. Lindstrom presented the award to Dr. Paul Reneau, Interim Associate Dean for the School of Education, Health and Human Performance and Professor of Exercise Science.

Over the past three years, Reneau has mentored more than 40 undergraduate students in completing their required research projects for their degree in Exercise Science. Of these 40 projects, 13 have been presented at regional or national conferences, 14 have published abstracts in international journals and two have been accepted for presentation at the 2015 American College for Sports Medicine national conference.

“Dr. Reneau’s commitment to his students goes beyond supporting research but is also found in his everyday teaching and advising interactions with students,” Lindstrom said.

Lindstrom read the following statement from one of Reneau’s students: “Dr. Reneau is as good as it gets. He is an all-around, top-notch professor, as well as everyday person. When sitting in his classroom, it is evident that he wants you to not only learn, but succeed. If he sees you walking around campus, he’s always the first to say hello, and if he has time, you can count on a comical conversation. Dr. Reneau really pushed me both semesters that I had him for class. While there were some days I didn’t think I would make it, there were others where he felt more like a confidant than a professor. Dr. Reneau certainly deserves to be rewarded for his incredible teaching abilities and all-around character.”

Reneau is a member of the graduate faculty. He earned a B.S. from West Virginia Wesleyan College, an M.Ed. from the George Peabody College of Vanderbuilt University and a Ph.D. from The University of Alabama. He has been an FSU faculty member since 2002.

Dr. Robin Payne, Faculty Recognition Award

The Faculty Recognition award is intended to honor a full-time faculty member who has engaged and inspired students to have original thinking and who has an active involvement and guidance in student projects. The award also honors the faculty for the capacity to reflect on action so as to engage in a process of continuous learning. Dr. Adam Podlaskowski, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, presented the Faculty Recognition Award to Dr. Robin Payne, Assistant Professor of History in the College of Liberal Arts.

“The Faculty Recognition Award is given to honor excellence in teaching and to encourage continuing efforts to excel. Recipients of the award have demonstrated a sustained, energetic and successful commitment to teaching, as well as having shown personal attention and care in advising students. The recipient of this year’s award has been an asset to her students and colleagues; and as her nomination letter points out she, ‘makes it a point to make herself available to all students who may be struggling with her class. She goes as far as to actively seek out a student who may need help and ask them if there is anything she can do,’ ” Podlaskowski said.

Payne earned a B.A. and M.A. from Washington State University and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has been a faculty member at FSU since 2012.

Dr. Rhonda Sanford, Fairmont State Foundation, Inc. Fellow Award

Dr. Amy Sidwell, Assistant Professor of Community Health Education, presented the Fairmont State Foundation, Inc. Fellowship to Dr. Rhonda Lemke Sanford, Professor of English. The award will assist Sanford’s travel to Ireland to present a scholarly paper at an international literary conference and to research at several of the foremost research libraries in Great Britain the week after the conference.

In June 2015, she will present her paper, “The place of the Amazon(s) in Spenser’s ‘Faerie Queene’ ” at the Fifth International Spenser Society Conference, The Place of Spenser/Spenser’s Places, at the University of Dublin and Dublin Castle, Ireland. She will present at the session, moderate a session and attend paper sessions and plenaries with some of the top international scholars of the 16th century poet, Sir Edmund Spenser. She will have the opportunity to visit Spenser’s home, Kilcomen Castle in County Cork. Sanford also will use the libraries at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, University of Dublin, Trinity College and the Public Records Office to continue her research into the real lives of unwed mothers and illegitimate children in Renaissance England.

A member of the graduate faculty, Sanford earned a B.A., M.B.A. and M.A. from the University of Colorado at Denver and a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She has been an FSU faculty member since 1999. She has been awarded two Faculty Development Grants, two West Virginia Humanities Commission Grants, a Folger Shakespeare Library Grant and a sabbatical, as well as a Provost Grant and a grant from the Office of Undergraduate Research. She is the author of the book, “Maps and Memory in Early Modern England: A Sense of Place” (2002).

Dr. Gwen Jones, Fairmont State Foundation, Inc. Grant

Dr. Amy Sidwell, Assistant Professor of Community Health Education, presented the Fairmont State Foundation, Inc. Grant to Dr. Gwendolyn Jones, Professor of Education in the FSU School of Education, Health and Human Performance.

Jones’s funded project is focused on providing undergraduate teacher education students with a professional presentation experience at the Southeast Regional Conference for the Association for Experiential Education (AEE) that is held in Durham, N.C., in April. The conference is within driving distance from Fairmont State University and affords students an opportunity to both present their work and experience the conference proceedings at an affordable price in both money and time.

Jones received the Faculty Recognition Award in 2013-2014. She joined the faculty in fall 2003. Jones holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Eastern Connecticut State College, a master’s degree in Special Education from the University of Connecticut and an Ed.D. from West Virginia University in Curriculum and Instruction. She received teaching certification from the West Virginia Department of Education in 2003.

Ryan Frost, Outstanding Adjunct Award

The Faculty Development Committee presented the Outstanding Adjunct Award to honor excellence in teaching and to encourage adjunct faculty's continuing efforts to excel. The award is given to faculty members who have demonstrated a sustained, energetic and successful commitment to teaching. Lindstrom presented the award to Ryan Frost.

Frost is an adjunct instructor of percussion in the Music Department of the School of Fine Arts. He enjoys working with all students but especially non-music majors. Frost says he firmly considers it his responsibility to expand all students’ knowledge of interest in music and to broaden their appreciation of the arts in general. Among other accomplishments, he has developed the curriculum that led to the establishment of a campus African Drum and Dance Ensemble, which had its first public performance last fall. He also collaborated with psychology professor Dr. Tad Kato by leading a drum circle during one of Kato’s classes to help students understand how playing music together can develop listening, cooperation and leadership skills.

Frost is dedicated to supporting diversity on campus. “Last fall at a meeting of the West Virginia Music Teachers Association, he chose to play a piece from the Middle East using a drum from Saudi Arabia. According to one of his colleagues, Frost was surrounded by international students from Saudi Arabia who were thrilled to hear an instrument with which they were familiar being played so well by an American,” Lindstrom said.

Dr. Jennifer Myers, Excellence in Academic Advising Award

The Award for Excellence in Academic Advising is presented to honor the demonstrated excellence and commitment that academic advisors play in the education, personal development, and success of their advisees. This year’s award winner is Dr. Jennifer Myers, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice in the College of Liberal Arts.

“From her nomination letter, it is apparent that Dr. Myers is proactive, knowledgeable, compassionate and understanding, and that she customizes her advising based on the experiences, needs, goals and considerations of her advisees,” said Pam Stephens, Coordinator of Academic Advising and the RBA Program, who presented the award.

Stephens read the following quote about Myers from a student: “Dr. Myers went out of her way to inform her advisees of the policies of the University and especially the program. Even before we would meet face to face, she would e-mail changes in program requirements in a manner that was understandable and effective. She has a remarkable personality that offers students comfort and ease, and she is virtually reachable at any time. She is always extremely swift when sent an e-mail, and many times those e-mails are sent during nights and weekends. I know that she cares because her e-mails are sent from her personal phone, meaning that she took time from her personal schedule to ensure that my education was on track.”

Myers has been an FSU faculty member since 2009. A member of the graduate faculty, she is also the director of the M.S. in Criminal Justice program. She earned her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from West Virginia University.

Fairmont State University, with a 120-acre main campus in Fairmont, W.Va., is part of the state’s growing high technology corridor. A city of about 19,000 people, Fairmont is close to larger cities and also to opportunities for outdoor recreation. Founded in 1865 as a private institution dedicated to educating teachers, FSU has a long history of academic excellence. At FSU, students find a wide range of fields of study with more than 80 four-year programs and graduate programs. With an enrollment of about 4,200, FSU is large enough that students find a vibrant campus life and small enough that they do not get lost in the crowd.

The mission of FSU is to provide opportunities for individuals to achieve their professional and personal goals and discover roles for responsible citizenship that promote the common good. FSU values scholarship, opportunity, achievement and responsibility.
